Thankful
2002
In
the spirit of the holidays...
I'm
thankful to be able to do
what I love. Yes, the hours
are long and the pay could
(certainly) be better, but
at the end of the day I spend
my time creating and that's
all I've ever wanted to do.
Of course if there are any
agents/A&R folks/publishers
out there who want to help
me reach a larger audience,
well, I can be reached at...
I'm
thankful to have made it a
whole year without missing
a single column. Maybe a few
of the deadlines were a little
squishy but in the end there
are 26 columns in 52 weeks.
Well, okay, technically the
year isn't over yet....
I'm
thankful for new Calphalon
pans and Henkels knives. They
make cooking a real joy -
well, as joyful as it can
be when you have a hack like
me concocting recipes.
I'm
thankful for the continued
support of friends, family
and fans during what has been
a difficult year professionally.
Singing is something that
has always come naturally
to me, and having spent the
last 12 months struggling
to do what I love has been
emotionally draining. I'm
happy to report that things
are finally on an upswing
and I'm singing at about 80
percent. And you thought the
new album was overdue LAST
year...
I'm
thankful that Dave Barry apparently
had never read any of the
columns I wrote discussing
his age.
I'm
thankful for the opportunity
to watch my daughter evolve
into a real person. It's amazing
to continue to watch as she
grows into her own personality.
Her sense of humor and curiosity
are a constant source of amazement
and amusement. Now if she'd
only pause once and a while
between non-stop rapid-fire
sentences, I might be able
to finish a complete thought....
I'm
thankful that I continue to
meet people who inspire me
to reach beyond what I think
I'm capable of.
I'm
thankful for an amazing bunch
of friends that I've known
since college. We recently
spent some time in Key West
together promoting a site
we all contribute to (www.keylimecafe.com)
and even after 14 years, we're
still close.
I'm
thankful that my daughter
wants "one more hug"
before bed, even if it is
simply a ruse designed to
stall bedtime a moment longer....
I'm
thankful for the friends I
have who are willing to give
me honest, straightforward
advice when it comes to my
creative endeavors. Folks
like Ralph MacDonald, Lennie
Peterson, Lisa Tarry, LJ Mismas
and Paul Martin are all invaluable
resources as I constantly
try to navigate the gray area
at the intersection of art
and commerce.
I'm
thankful still for all of
you who take the time to read
this, share it with your friends,
and email me with your perspective
on my random thoughts. And
I'm especially thankful to
Shannon for her grace when
I mistook her for someone
else and inadvertently emailed
her my home phone number....
...What
are you thankful for this
year?
